APPLE PICKING
We once made love
Under an apple tree
At the Brookfield Orchards
On a cold and misty
October afternoon.
The orchards were still
Open for apple picking
But there were only a few
Who braved the day.
I don’t know if it was
The thrill of the outdoors
Or the chance of being discovered,
That made that lusty interlude
So incredibly intense,
And so especially memorable.
It was without a doubt
The most daring romantic experience
I had ever had before.
I doubt it will ever be topped
As we both moved on
So many years ago.
I’m older now and
Much less daring
But no less intense
No less passionate
And no less yearning.
But since that daring, crazy day
I have never looked at
Golden Delicious Apples
The same.
